Overcoming Life's Addictions

Gambling addiction is a terrible problem that is growing rapidly across the United States and throughout the world. Gambling is frequently portrayed in television, radio, print and Web advertisements as something that is innocent fun and a relaxing way to “earn” money and get away from the stresses of daily life. However, the simple fact is that gambling takes the gambler's money without promising anything of value in return. Casinos, lotteries and other gambling enterprises reap billions of dollars from gamblers (a disproportionate number of whom are poor) while weakening the society in which they operate.

By teaching people that getting something for nothing is an easy or even preferable alternative to working hard to earn one's way in the world, those who run major gambling enterprises lead millions of people toward an addiction that mars their own lives. Gambling addicts also harm millions of others who have to deal with their lost productivity and dishonesty and pay (with tax money) for their destructive addiction.

If you've ever gambled, you probably realize how easy it is to get hooked on gambling. Those who get addicted to gambling often find that their addiction creeps up on them subtly. One week, it might be a simple trip to the slot machines; the next, it could be sports betting on the Internet; and the next thing the gambling addict knows, he or she could be spending money that clearly should be used for savings, debt payments or bills. Many gambling addicts develop an additional habit of lying to their loved ones and employers about their addiction.

To stop gambling permanently, you need to strengthen your willpower and establish a new pattern of honesty and self-control. This may require professional help. There are many treatment centers and professional counseling resources that can help you overcome your gambling.

I also suggest giving your life to Jesus Christ. He is an awesome help in the time of trouble.
